Kintsugi No-Gi Set in Blue and Gold.
During our social media campaign for this product many of our fans strongly resonated with the concept behind this no-gi set, and we’re very excited to see all of you wearing it on the mat.
What is Kintsugi?
Kintsugi is a traditional Japanese art form in which broken ceramics are repaired and reassembled with gold, silver, or platinum. The result is not just a functional object but an enhanced work of art. Kintsugi conveys the idea that objects are meant to be used. Over time they may show signs of wear or breaks, which are not hidden but celebrated as marks of a life lived.
People are like ceramics too – most of us carry scars, whether physical or mental (and definitely physical if you do Jiu-Jitsu). Those scars are an essential part of us and tell our story.
Not only is the damage not concealed, but the repair is literally highlighted… a physical expression of the spirit of Mushin. Mushin is often translated as ‘no mind,’ but it also carries the meaning of being fully present in the moment, without attachment, with calmness despite changing circumstances. … The blows of fate that people experience over time could not be more clearly visible than in the cracks, chips, and breakage that ceramics endure. This aesthetic of being is known in Japan as *mono no aware* – a sympathetic sensitivity, or perhaps an identification with things outside ourselves.”*
